Module Outline

Analogue Communication and Propagation provides the students with an introduction to electromagnetic signal propagation in different media. The topics introduced in this module have applications in many areas of electrical and electronics engineering such as wired and wireless communications, , antenna design, satellite systems, radars, electrical power transmission, and integrated circuit design, to name a few. This module places a particular emphasis on communications related applications.

The module will start with basics of the theory of electromagnetics, and then move on to wave propagation in vacuum and in transmission lines, consider wave propagation in the atmosphere especially in conjunction with wireless radio transmission and satellite communication systems and their link budgets. The physical sources and statistical properties of noise in a communication system will be investigated and analytical tools for noise analysis are going to be explored. Finally an introduction to different types antennas and basic receiver structures for wireless communication systems will be provided.
