Theory, Methods and Values in Practice 2 (866L5)

Autumn and spring teaching

This course is directly linked with your second practice placement (SWP2). You'll join a Theory, Methods and Values in Practice group that is relevant to your practice placement. Some skills workshop teaching will be shared.

During this module we will:

• critically examine theoretical concepts and disciplinary knowledge that inform assessment, planning, intervention and review in social work practice
• reflect, with creativity and imagination, on how personal experience and empirical research contribute to the development of effective social work practice in the field
• establish of the observation skills necessary for effective communication with people who use services
• explore the contested and ambiguous values and ethics of social work in the field in question, and the dynamics of power and discrimination through which they are applied or negotiated
• develop and consolidate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of a range of methods and approaches to the interprofessional context of contemporary practice.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 101 hours of contact time and about 199 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
